Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water - Beginner’s Guide: Tips & Tricks

Are you ready to improve your photography skills and explore the world of ghost photography? I’m referring to the recently released “Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water” video game on Steam by Koei Tecmo Games Co., Ltd. The game only offers single-player mode and immerses you in an unforgettable world filled with evil. Although the original game was only released on Nintendo platforms in 2014, a remastered version was released for 8th and 9th generation consoles and Windows on October 28, 2021. In the game, you explore various locations filled with hostile ghosts and capture them using the “Camera Obscura”, as in previous games in the series.

There are three playable characters, each with their own unique personality and abilities. The environment can be explored from a third-person perspective, and includes ruined buildings and lush forests. With the help of the interactive map, you can either walk or sprint to move forward.

How to Escape if Caught by a Ghost

Characters are often confronted with hostile ghosts that attack and cause damage when touched. If you are caught by a ghost, you have two options to escape: dodge or break free from its grip.

Your Primary and Only Weapon

You cannot physically harm the ghosts, as your only weapon is the Camera Obscura. This camera serves as both a defensive and offensive weapon, allowing you to harm the ghost from a first-person perspective. Keep in mind that the amount of damage the ghost takes depends on the distance and angle of your shots.

Note: The “Fatal Frame” shot is the most damaging to a ghost as it directly hits its weak spot.

After taking a shot, ghost fragments may appear for you to collect.

Keep the Camera Ready

In this game, taking photos with your combat abilities is not the only way to get around. Ghosts can appear either in your vision or in unusual locations. Hence, it’s advisable to always keep your finger on the camera button, ready to capture a shot as soon as you see any movement.

Don’t Waste Items

The game rewards you with points based on the photos you capture and the items you find. For a perfect shot, you will earn extra points. We recommend using your photography skills to catch ghosts and earn maximum points. To conserve items, use Medical Herbs to heal instead of scared water, as scared water costs more points.

Never Be Shy to Run Away

In Maiden of Black Water, most spirits are slow but can do significant damage if they get too close. To avoid getting hurt, you may have to skip the Camera Mode and run away. If you are surrounded by ghosts, sprinting for a short distance may bring you to a location where you can set up camera shots to capture multiple ghosts at once.

Seek Help from Non-Player Characters

During your exploration, you may encounter various non-player characters who can assist you in fighting ghosts. If you find yourself in a situation where you need help, don’t hesitate to ask NPCs for assistance.

Learn About Fatal Frame Shot

To deal more damage, keep your distance from the ghost as short as possible. Go to Camera Mode, set the frame, and wait until the red light blinks to capture a Fatal Frame photo.

Upgrade Your Tools

You can use the points you earn to purchase costumes or upgrade your camera, lenses, and other tools to increase damage, potency, and reload time.

We hope these tips have been helpful in your journey to win Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. If you have any additional tips or tricks to contribute, feel free to leave a comment, and we will update this guide as soon as your comment is approved.
