There was a time when real-time strategy games ruled the mindshare of gamers everywhere. I remember when Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty launched, taking the world by storm. I had never played the original Starcraft, but once I booted up its sequel, I was irrevocably hooked on the RTS genre. RTS games, large and small, have come and gone since that first installment of the Starcraft II campaign was released, and there is always more in development for the rabid fanbase of RTS. Let’s see what is on the way with the top 7 new upcoming real-time strategy games of 2022 and 2023.

Broken Arrow

Engage in military conflicts on a massive scale in Steel Balalaika’s Broken Arrow, an RTS with a huge number of customization options. Men of War 2

Next, we have another World War II-themed RTS with Best Way’s Men of War 2. This sequel promises to be bigger and more action-packed than the first, including new battle locations, military units, exciting game modes, and multiple campaigns, all while maintaining the dedication to historical accuracy that made the first Men of War so special. Use real military tactics to fight explosive battles on the Eastern and Western Fronts of the second World War. Plan shrewd ambushes, call in airstrikes, or steam right through enemy lines in an extreme show of force to let the enemy know you are an unstoppable force. TFM: The First Men

Traverse the vast reaches of space in the incredible sci-fi RTS Falling Frontier by Stutter Fox Studios. Design your own unique starship, construct recon stations, and fight enemy explorers in the procedurally generated star system you call home. The construction of shipyards, refineries, and supply depots will all be crucial to your success, and each aspect of your operation can be upgraded. The size and speed of your vessel will affect your combat viability, but the tactical use of asteroid fields and other space debris can secure a victory regardless of what you’re working with. Deep combat mechanics create tense RTS battles where projectiles ricochet, and the subsystems of ships can be disabled piecemeal. Homeworld 3

The Homeworld series is a big name for sci-fi RTS fans and has been for a long time, with the original game being launched in 1999. The franchise went silent after the second game’s release in 2003 until Blackbird Interactive launched a crowdfunding campaign in an attempt to get another sequel funded. In late 2019, that campaign was successful, and work on Homeworld 3 began. Like the previous two games, sci-fi flavored RTS space combat is the order of the day and gameplay hinges on a 3D ballistics system. After a long wait, Homeworld 3 will arrive on PC in the last part of 2022.

Dune: Spice Wars

Last on this list is the video game adaptation of the incredible 2021 Denis Villeneuve film that was based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi tome: Dune. While not much information is currently available, we do know that Dune: Spice Wars is presented as an RTS that takes place on the sand-covered surface of the planet Arrakis. Play as either House Atreides or House Harkonnen as you fight for dominance of the planet through spice collection, RTS battles, and even spycraft. Crush your enemies and when Dune: Spice Wars rides a sandworm onto PC in 2022.
