TOP 6 New Upcoming Medieval Fantasy Games for You to Explore in 2022 & 2023

As children, who among us didn’t want to play pretend in some form of medieval fantasy? Kings and queens, gallant knights, killer dragons, even incredibly powerful wizards were all possible options for us to become. The fascination with this period and setting goes back generations thanks to novels, film, tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, but now we also have video games that are set in this enchanted genre.

The past few decades have given us medieval classics that cover all types of games, from the real-time strategy of the Age of Empires series to the massive open-world adventures of the Elder Scrolls series. In these games, we can live out our childhood medieval fantasies, and in the next few years, we have many new games to look forward to in the genre. Here are the top 6 upcoming medieval games coming for 2022 and 2023.

  1. A Plague Tale: Requiem

The first game on this list is the sequel to 2019’s surprise Indie hit, A Plague Tale: Innocence, which has won a number of awards for its writing, art, and game design since its release. With a pedigree like that, Focus Home Interactive’s upcoming A Plague Tale: Requiem is sure to be an impressive game, especially since it is being developed for the next-gen consoles. In it, our heroes from the previous game, Amicia, and Hugo, continue their harrowing fight for survival during the middle ages in the face of obstacles both natural and supernatural. Use stealth, makeshift tools, and even magic to claw your way towards an island that might hold the secret to cleansing Hugo of his curse. Brace yourself for more rat mayhem when A Plague Tale: Requiem releases for PS5, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch some time in 2022.

  1. Triangle Strategy

Next up, we have less of a direct sequel but more of a spiritual successor to 2018’s Octopath Traveler in Square Enix’s upcoming medieval turn-based tactics game Triangle Strategy. Using the same gorgeous “HD-2D” visuals as Octopath built in Unreal Engine 4, Triangle Strategy is shaping up to be another visually impressive middle ages adventure. In combat, your strategic prowess is just as important as your weapons and spells. Use elevation to your advantage, and build up TP to unleash powered-up attacks that will leave your enemies decimated. Choices made at pivotal points of the story will change how events play out. Don your armor and hone your tactical instincts; Triangle Strategy launches on Nintendo Switch on March 4th, 2022.

  1. Avowed

Obsidian Entertainment is no stranger to medieval worlds. The creators of hits like Pillars of Eternity, Dungeon Siege III, and Tyranny are building a brand new medieval fantasy to get lost in with their upcoming game: Avowed. Not much is known about the game currently, but a short reveal trailer gives us a look at a castle under siege, skeleton warriors, rune magic, and the shadow of a very unhappy monster. It appears to be a first-person RPG in the vein of Skyrim, which will excite anybody who has played that masterpiece. It, unfortunately, does not have a solid release date, but thanks to Microsoft’s acquisition of Obsidian, Avowed will launch as part of Xbox’s Game Pass for Series X, S, and PC in 2022.

  1. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Our next upcoming game is a spinoff of a major franchise. Taking the same Borderlands looter shooter gameplay that has been enjoyed for over a decade and giving it a medieval fantasy makeover is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. This game is presented as characters from the borderlands franchise enjoying a Dungeons & Dragons style tabletop game where they fight fantastical creatures with Borderlands’ signature crazy weaponry and the additional new medieval combat options like swords, axes, crossbows, and magic spells. Raid dungeons and fight dragons with Tiny Tina when Wonderlands releases on March 25th, 2022

  1. Dragon Age 4

The Dragon Age franchise has been a cornerstone of medieval fantasy video games since the original launched in 2009. Since then, Dragon Age II and Dragon Age: Inquisition have provided us with the classic Bioware story and gameplay we crave, but the last Dragon Age game came out almost eight years ago. Thankfully, Dragon Age 4 was confirmed to be in development in 2021 and is scheduled to be released at some point in 2023, meaning it has been under development for several years a the very least.

  1. Elden Ring

Perhaps the most anticipated medieval-themed video game of the last several years is From Software’s Elden Ring. Developed by the team who brought us the Dark Souls series and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and written by the author of Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin, this game has the potential to be one of the biggest games of the last few years in terms of both story and gameplay. Become the Tarnished and explore the Lands Between. Mount your spectral horse and ride into battle with demigods who have become drunk with power. Prepare to face the Elden Ring when it reveals itself on February 25th, 2022.

  • Mike Alexander

Mike has been playing video games since he was able to hold a controller, having been fascinated by Sonic 2 on his mom’s Sega Genesis. That fascination and passion for the art form has grown exponentially nearly 30 years later, and he doesn’t see that fading away anytime soon.
