7 Best Games Like Heroes of Might & Magic III to Play in 2023

Heroes 3

Let’s take a trip back to the year 1999. Things were waaaaaay different, and not just in everyday life. Video games were definitely not as big, or even as popular as they are now. It wasn’t necessarily an underground hobby, but it was something small pockets of people enjoyed rather than EVERYONE ALL THE TIME, like it is now. Twitch probably wouldn’t have existed.

But there was one game that came out in 1999 that held my interest for quite some time: Heroes of Might & Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia. I was already a sucker for turn-based strategy games, and HoMM III’s gameplay combined with its story to make something I couldn’t possibly ignore. I played and returned to that game for many, many years.

And now, I think I might have squeezed every last drop of enjoyment out of it. But, looking on the bright side, that gives me an opportunity to see the many games that were inspired by HoMM III and have evolved the genre over time. So warm up your brains and start fine-tuning your strategies, because these are the 7 best games like Heroes of Might & Magic III to play in 2023 that will surely satisfy your gaming itch.

Age of Wonders 3

Age of Wonders 3 isn’t the most recent game in the widely-acclaimed series, but it is one of the best turn-based strategy games you can play right now.

In it, players will select from one of six classes: Sorcerer, Rogue, Theocrat, Archdruid, Warlord, or the Dreadnought, a new class exclusive to Age of Wonders 3 that is focused on technology. With each of these classes, players will earn experience through battle, dedicate points to research in order to unlock new skills, abilities, and equipment.

As if that wasn’t enough, there are also six races to forge alliances or rivalries with: High Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Goblins, Draconians, and Orcs. The depth of roleplay available in Age of Wonders 3 is almost unmatched, and you can get it on Steam right now.

Spellforce: Conquest of Eo

Become the most powerful mage on the planet in Spellforce: Conquest of Eo. As the title suggests, players will learn hundreds of spells and uncover powerful ability-granting artifacts that will give them the strength they need to rule the land of Eo.

The tactical turn-based battles in this game will test your mettle, and the powerful foes you go up against will challenge you like never before. How you deal with these challenges and overcome these battles, is entirely up to you.

Will you create vast armies of the undead as a Necromancer? Craft potions and explosives as an Alchemist? Or maybe you’ll craft boost-giving glyphs and magical items for your troops as an Artificer. Spellforce: Conquest of Eo makes all of it possible.

Spellforce: Conquest of Eo landed on Steam just a few months ago, and you can pick it up now.

Wartales

After a long period of Early Access on Steam, the massive open world RPG and turn-based strategy game Wartales is now available. Explore a vast map, pick up quests, and explore ancient dungeons and tombs in a game that has benefitted from several years’ worth of player feedback.

In Wartales, one hundred years have passed since the Edoran Empire fell. An unstoppable plague overtook its populace, and reduced the nation to a bunch of fractured communities. Now, bandits, thieves, and mercenaries roam the countryside taking on any kind of work they can in order to survive.

There is no honor.

As the leader of one of these bands of mercenaries, you will make the decisions of where to travel, which jobs to take, and how to best complete them. If that means wiping out a village full of people, so be it!

Wartales 1.0 dropped on April 12th, and you can make it yours today.
