6 Best Current & Upcoming Railroad Simulators in 2022 - 2023

There is a certain appeal to trains and railroad systems that is just indescribable. It is a nearly ancient form of transportation that still persists in its original form in many places, whether for novelty or actual functionality. This fascination with railroads has, over time, spilled into the world of video games.

There are hundreds of games that allow players to be the conductor of their own train, the architect of their own railroad system, or even the manager of their own railway company, and these games just keep coming. Let’s take a look at some of the current and upcoming games in this genre for 2022 and 2023. All Aboard!

  1. Sid Meier’s Railroads!

Legendary game designer Sid Meier has had his hands on so many incredible games over the years, including the venerated and long-running Civilization series. However, in 2006 the designer returned to the train tycoon-style game, and absolutely knocked it out of the park once again.

Developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, Sid Meier’s Railroads! Is the return to the genre that Meier created in 1990 with Railroad Tycoon. Railroads! Was created for a new generation of gamers (at the time), and features vibrant 3D graphics, challenging gameplay, and a streamlined UI.

  1. Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022

This next game is MUCH more recent. Trains Railroad Simulator 2022 is the latest entry in a long-running simulator series. With over 20 years worth of development and improvements, it might be the definitive version of the entire genre.

In Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022, you can build up your very own railroad system using a suite of simple world-building tools, or you can enjoy premade routes created by the developers. The game comes with 400 vehicles to get you started, with another 70,000 available via the Trainz Download Station.

  1. RAILROADS Online!

Developer Stefan Kelnberger is hard at work on his Steam Early Access title, RAILROADS Online! This gorgeous simulator gives you all the tools you’ll need to build your own rail system to use in either single-player mode or online multiplayer with your friends.

Explore the open world, interact with your trains instruments in first-person, and transport goods from palace to place to earn money. The more money you invest in your railway and trains, the more the gorgeously rendered, Unreal Engine-powered world opens up to you.

  1. Railroad Corporation

The last games on this list were all about modern railway systems. Railroad Corporation takes a different path by being set in the 19th century, what is often called the Golden Age of Steam. In this game, you’ll build a rail system to connect early American settlements, transport goods, and advance your technology to attempt to stay on top of this highly competitive industry.

Railroad Corporation’s mechanics even extend out from the creation of the rails and transport of goods. You can also participate in political lobbying to further your interests, manage business loans, and even recruit employees for your company.

  1. Railroad Corporation 2

If Railroad Corporation’s setting and many features got you excited, then get ready for its upcoming sequel. Railroad Corporation 2 advances through the Golden Age of Steam up to the 20th century’s electrification of the railway. Utilize both diesel and electric technology to push your railroad to new heights of profitability and efficiency.

Railroad Corporation 2 even allows you to build up entire cities to support your railway. From production facilities to banks and hospitals, you’ll need more than just train stations in order for your corporation to thrive. You can enjoy the game in single-player or with your friends in multiplayer when the game is released sometime in 2022.

  1. Railway Empire

Gaming Minds Studios and Kalypso Media brought train-obsessed gamers Railway Empire back in 2018, and it’s still keeping them busy. Like Railway Corporation, Railway Empire takes place in early America, when it was referred to as “The New World”.

The goal of the game is to create the most powerful, expansive rail system in North America and you’ll have a seemingly unlimited number of ways to achieve that goal. You’ll build out your rail network however you see fit, purchase 40 unique trains to use on it, and build up cities along your routes to facilitate healthy growth and stay ahead of the competition. Also unique to Railway Empire is the ability to sabotage your railway competitors using raids and industrial espionage to keep them down.
