The 5 Most Anticipated FPS Games of 2022

First-person shooters have tremendous influence in the gaming industry. From the behemoths Call of Duty, Battlefield, and CS: GO, countless titles from wide-ranging genres have emerged. Gamers have come to expect the traditional yearly titles developed by EA and Activision, but the upcoming year has some interesting promises when it comes to FPS. We shifted through almost every announced title and compiled the five games you should add to your list. The following games aren’t listed in any particular order.

1. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Windows

Release Date: March 25, 2022

With an official date being announced through the PlayStation Showcase, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland surely made a splash. Developed by Borderlands creators: Gearbox Software, the title is a spin-off from the main series that has a more fantastical approach to FPS. The title maintains the classic visuals and gameplay that made Borderlands a classic while using the outlandish fantasy world to explore new mechanics to the recipe.

In Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, bullets and magic cross paths, and players are invited to explore this action-packed frantic world through their own unique characters. Building upon tradition, the game relies heavily on RPG and allows for multiple approaches to free the world from the tyranny of the Dragon Lord.

2. Starfield

Platforms: Xbox Series X | S, Windows

Release Date: November 11, 2022

Starfield is not only one of the most anticipated first-person shooters of 2022 but one of the most anticipated games of the year. Truthfully, most of it resides on the almost mystical aura that was created around Bethesda and their legendary catalog of games. Even if recently, it hasn’t truly displayed the same magic it once showcased, Bethesda is undoubtedly one of the most capable developers in the industry. Starfield will be an Xbox exclusive and Bethesda’s to prove they still have it.

The game itself is still shrouded in secrecy; gameplay and story-wise, very little have been shown. We know that Starfield is “Skyrim in space,” according to Bethesda’s own Todd Howard. This suggests that there will be a lot of character customization and various RPG-like elements to this FPS. The developer isn’t new to either genre; having published legendary series Doom, and Skyrim, mixing both genres to create a new title should feel natural.

Expectations are astronomically high – no pun intended. Besides Bethesda’s reputation, there is a lot of trust from Microsoft Studios towards the project since they are betting on the exclusive to level the playing field versus Sony exclusives. Finally, if rumors are true, the amount of content and the sheer size of the game will be something unparalleled, with leaks suggesting each planet will be bigger than the entirety of Skyrim V’s map.

3. Redfall

Platforms: Xbox Series X | S, Windows

Release Date: Summer 2022

Another collaboration between Bethesda and Arkane Studios, Redfall, is an upcoming adventure, a first-person shooter. The developer from Prey, Dishonored, and most recently the shooter Deathloop, is ready for a new title for the summer of 2022. Relying on co-op and single-player modes, this open-world game has the potential of being a fresh take on the genre, mostly because Arkane Studios has very creative mechanics throughout their games.

In Redfall, parties of up to four players set out to fight the Vampire race that was born out of scientific error. Each of the four characters has its unique style, abilities, and gameplay, and alone or with friends, you need to fend off these creatures. These Vampires have risen to power and constantly evolve to become bigger, smarter, and acquire new abilities; it is your job to fight them and their human followers out of Redfall, Massachusetts.

4. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Platforms: Xbox Series X | S, Windows

Release Date: TBA 2022

Reminiscent of Warhammer: Vermintide 2, the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will be a co-op first-person shooter, where four players fight their way through waves of enemies. This series is an award-winning, best-selling title in video games or tabletop; the universe they built is admirable. The world-building and lore are extremely well developed, detailed, and a great part of the reason why fans fell in love with Warhammer 40,000.

In this new title, you and your friends are a squad of Imperial Guardsmen investigating a supposed Chaos invasion at the Hive City of Tertium in Atoma Prime. Here the critically acclaimed combat from Vermintide 2 is to be expected, with subtle changes designed to provide more even combat between close and long-range than its predecessor.

5. Perfect Dark

Platforms: Xbox Series X | S, Windows

Release Date: TBA 2022

Older players were probably screaming at the screen when a new Perfect Dark was announced. The original Nintendo 64 game is considered one of the best first-person shooters ever created; the title became a classic and was never truly forgotten. It is hard to separate how much of the hype surrounding this game is due to nostalgia and how much of it is actually real. A dangerous line to toe, surely, since every title with such expectation tends to frustrate or not live up to the expectations. However, if the new game is able to capture the magic of the original one in any manner, younger players, as well as older gamers, are in for a treat.

The title isn’t exactly a remake or a reboot, but truly a new chapter in the protagonist’s story. Originally the game told the story of two conflicting alien races that used the earth as a battleground, but the main plot revolved around what two distinct human groups wanted to do with the newfound technology. Next year’s game is set to take the original’s directives into account but aims to separate itself with a unique take on Joanna’s journey. As a gamer, however, if the multiplayer mode is half as good, Perfect Dark will be one of the best titles of 2022.

Honorable Mentions

Countless FPS titles caught our attention; however, they might hold those nominations for another time, maybe surrounding newcomers and not the most anticipated. Regardless, we can expect Activision and EA to announce a new entry to Call of Duty, and Battlefield respectively. While those titles always generate a huge uproar amongst fans, we are incredibly excited for the upcoming Dying Light 2: Stay Human, which was pushed back from this year to 2022, and the rumors regarding Overwatch 2. As soon as more info is released, we’ll let you know!
