You can earn knowledge points in the game by achieving various goals;

-Reaching larger populations

-Building different types of structures

-Hunting different types of animals

-Acquiring the various resources

-Killing raiders

-Unlocking milestones

-Surviving more years

You can then use these points to unlock new techs, which allow you to advance your settlement and be able to sustain larger populations.
