We Who Are About To Die - Advanced Combat Guide: Offense

These are the controls and techniques you should be familiar with before entering the arena in “We Who Are About To Die.”

Basic Attack

  • Click LMB to attack. When you click and hold, you will hold that attack.

  • The attack direction you picked is locked into place until you attack after 1 second.

  • When you release LMB, your character strikes. The direction your cursor moves after clicking LMB determines the attack direction.

Attack Direction

  • Most weapons have 8 attack directions. Spears have 3.

  • Simply clicking without moving the mouse results in a stab.

  • Double-clicking without moving the mouse results in an overhead attack.

  • Try imagining you are ‘pulling’ your character’s arm and then releasing a strike whenever you are ready.

Attack Strength

  • Physics heavily influence damage output of your weapon. The faster your weapon moves, the more damage it does.

  • Hitting with the outer end of your weapon will deal more damage. Pommels and blunt areas on a weapon suffer a 80% damage reduction.

  • The more you pull back an attack, the harder you swing and the more damage you deal. Your movement speed, turning and other factors all affect your swing speed.

Offensive Techniques

  • When targeting, move your cursor to swing your torso into your strike.

  • You can cancel any attack at any point by clicking again. Use this to feign/fake attacks by attacking again immediately.

  • In general, slow, controlled methodical combat will yield better results.

  • At full stamina, you get a stamina boost that significantly increases the speed of the next attack. The cooldown is 10 seconds.

  • You can dash into stabs or swings for a speed bonus.

  • When targeting your character will turn to face targets that are above or below you.

  • Backhanded polearm attacks deal +50% knockback.

  • Sprint to quickly pirouette or run into an attack and add speed.

  • Combine attacks and movement into new moves and your own style of combat.

Throwing Weapons

  • To throw a weapon, simply drop your weapon during an attack.

  • The most reliable attack for throwing is an overhead slash/stab (spear) by double clicking.

  • Mastering throwing requires good timing and practice.

  • Throwing skill will assist your throws vertically and horizontally and launch your weapons faster.

Each equipment setup has certain advantages and disadvantages, for example:

• Swords: Swords are your all-around weapon, but do not provide any particular advantages.

• Axes: Typically deal more damage to shields and unarmored Aspirants, but have short range. Great for throwing.

• Maces: Generally deal extra damage to armor and have extra knockback, but have short range.

• 2 Handed Weapons: Typically deal high damage, but leave you vulnerable. Good against multiple opponents.

• Spear: When used with a shield, they don’t have much horizontal flexibility, but the range might save your life. Spears are quick but deal less damage.

• Polearms: Slower weapons that deal high damage. Right handed attacks are backhanded, dealing only extra knockback.

• Shields: Cover mainly the left side of enemies, swing for the right side.
