Might and Magic Lore Timeline: Complete History from Enroth to Ashan

Might and Magic fans! Like me, you’ve spent hundreds of hours with this incredible franchise, probably since you were a kid (or young enough to comprehend “turn-based strategy” without crying). The history? It’s a fantastic, sprawling, utterly wonderful mess that can even be dizzying for old hats, let alone anyone just dipping their toes in. For real, it’s a lot!
Fear not, fearless adventurers! This isn’t another dry history lesson, no sir. We’re going to untangle the whole Might & Magic series into chronological order, cutting through stardust mayhem and forgotten kingdoms to give you the most lucid, comprehensive timeline ever built! Take this for your ultimate lore companion, whether you’re battling Kreegans in Enroth or making it through Ashan’s demon politics. You’re gonna need it!
We’re tackling this beast in two large pieces: the Ancient History, covering everything prior to Ubisoft taking over the franchise (i.e., all of those Might & Magic RPGs through Heroes of Might and Magic IV and Dark Messiah – the good old days!), and then the Ashan Timeline, beginning with Heroes of V and beyond. Both share an absurd dating system, because why be straightforward, huh?! We’ve got AS (After the Silence) and BS (Before the Silence) for the old guard, and YSD (Years of the Seventh Dragon) for Ashan. We’ll give you the need-to-know overviews and the crucial dates, so you’re not drowning in every last detail, but you’ll certainly be aware of when the epic events went down.
Ready to be a certified lore master?! Let’s roll!!
Part 1: The Ancient History – When Worlds Collided! (Pre-Ubisoft Era)
This is where it all began: ancient wars, youthful civilizations, and the doomsday “Reckoning” that redefined literally everything! We’re dividing it up into four acts: The Time of Wonders, Age of Monsters, Age of Man, and Post-Reckoning. Seatbelts, it’s a long read!
The Time of Wonders: Cosmic Births and First Wars!!
The very foundation of the universe, where gods gave birth and the first major wars were fought. Untainted, unfiltered cosmic spectacle.
- Origin (Unknown BS): First, before time really ever started, the ancient Aenar and their worlds simply existed. And soon enough, the titanic struggle between the mysterious Ancients and the mysterious Creators began, a war which would lay the foundations for EVERYTHING!!
- Birth of Enroth (c. 10,000 BS): Amidst all this cosmic mayhem, the great Elemental Lords (think your ancient Fire, Water, Earth, and Air deities) sat down and hashed out the world that we’d all get to call Enroth. Not bad for a side job, really.
- Ancient and Kreegan War (circa 350 BS): From literally the depths of the void itself, the completely nasty Kreegans (basically demonic space-bugs, and SO bad) descended for a surprise raid on the Ancients’ enormous empire. It turned ugly, fast!
- The Crossing (Unknown BS): The Ancients, facing extinction, set about colonizing Enroth on a large scale! Big continents like Erathia, Antagarich, and Tatalia were colonized, and the first governments started to form. Very civilized for all the destruction.
- Lionheart’s Reign (Unknown BS): Early colonial governments were established, and the powerful Empire of Bracada began its glorious ascension.
- Wars on Bracada (Unknown BS): This individual Gavin Magnus more or less destroyed the Bracada and Tatalia empires, and things descended into a period of complete, absolute anarchy. Most importantly, this period also saw the births of three sheer legends: Tarnum, Gavin Magnus, and Ryan Gryphonheart. Pay attention to those names!
- Fall of Bracada (circa 100 to 0 BS): Tarnum, resigned to his fate, became the Barbarian King to defeat the tyrant. The wastelanders liberated Stone City. Tarnum and Gavin Magnus clashed, but plot twist!!! Gavin Magnus revealed his immortality. He and Ryan Gryphonheart teamed up to form the kingdoms of Bracada and Erathia. What a team!!!
- Conquest of the Underworld (100 to 0 BS): Ryan Gryphonheart died. Allison (his daughter) and Tarnum (a different Tarnum, assisting) embarked on a perilous quest, successfully rescuing Ryan’s soul and bringing it back to Paradise. Talk about dedication, geez.
- Day of Fire (1 to 0 BS): Major Alain of Alains, driven by revenge over his daughter’s death, set off an ancient device, incinerating cities in Enroth’s south. Not so covert, that guy.
- The Silence (circa 0 AS): The mysterious interface between the Ancients and Spinward Rim worlds inexplicably ended. A new AS (After the Silence) era of dating had begun.
Age of Monsters: New Powers, Old Evils!!
Since the Ancients went quiet, new empires rose, and terrifying monsters (and worse!) haunted the land. It’s named after it for a reason!
- Erathian Revolution (circa 0 to 100 AS): Colonial governments on Erathia were toppled. Power vacuum thingy gets activated, cue drama.
- Creation of Krewlod (Unknown AS): The Elemental Lords, in their infinite wisdom, waged war against one another once more, inadvertently creating the unforgiving, untamed regions of Krewlod. Very handy for barbarians later on.
- Forfall of the Forges (113 AS): The last of the mighty heavenly forges, relics of a distant past, burned out of production. Less magic techs for everybody, boo.
- Sword of Frost Created (approx. 170 AS): The legendary Sword of Frost, a device of enormous might (and very cold energies), was forged in the icy northlands of Enroth. Be careful around that thing!
- Founding of AvLee (Unknown AS): A fresh, more dashing generation of snow elves, in rebellion against their elders, migrated north into Antagarich and founded the green, foresty kingdom of AvLee. Elven valor, they adore.
- Founding of Deyja (Unknown AS): Bracadan cultists, neck deep in necromancy (always a good idea, right?!), were banished. They found themselves in southern AvLee and became the creepy kingdom of Deyja. Necropolis, anyone?!
- Jadame Settled (Unknown AS): The resilient Von Ferid people, from Erathia and Antagarich, were able to settle the diverse lands of Jadame.
- Rise of the Regin Empire (500 AS): Herrick and his sea pirates formed the Empire of the Endless Ocean. Very pirate-y.
- Discovery of Light and Dark Magic (circa 428 AS): The brilliant Terex made some key discoveries, uncovering the secrets of light and dark magic and furthering elemental schools of magic.
- Revolt of the Beastmasters (Unknown AS): Tarnum (yup, he’s back, said I told you he was a legend!) was dispatched by his ancestors to free the Mudlanders from Erathian slavers and bring them together into the great nation of Tatalia.
- War of the Elements (Unknown AS): The Elemental Lords roamed Enroth wantonly. Tarnum, in charge of a Bracadan expedition, teamed up with Gavin Magnus and the first Exceeding to repel the elemental assault. Just another average day at the office.
- War of the Ancestors (Unknown AS): This war was completely corrupted by unscrupulous worshippers in Krewlod, who conspired with a hot moon. Devotees of War ravaged the world, but True Siren and War were ultimately defeated, and War was cleansed of his craziness. It was an entire, complicated affair, believe me.
- Construction of Celeste (499 AS): The glistening capital city of Bracada, Celeste, was built, the very pinnacle of civilization and finicky magic.
- Witch’s Guild Formed (550 to 800 AS): The mysterious and more powerful Witch’s Guild emerged. Because someone has to brew the potions, naturally.
- Timber Wars (649 to 789 AS): Erathian King David Gryphonheart IV decided to invade Elven forest lands, which AvLee did not appreciate, much, much at all. A 15-decade calamitous war saw disputed lands. Elves versus humans, classic!
- Foundations of Harmondale (689 to 692 AS): There was an Erathian who founded Harmondale and built the fabled Castle Harmondale. Nice homes.
- Ruler’s Ring Created (744 AS): Joshua Storm forged the powerful Ruler’s Ring. Another artifact to chase!
- End of the Age of Monsters (ca. 782-800 AS): Mekorig the Blind, the brilliant artificer, cranked out an unending quantity of powerful artifacts, ultimately bringing the Age of Monsters to a close and the Age of Man to open. Finally!
- Skirmishes for Harmondale (816 to 817 AS): Vigorous squabbles for Harmondale were the order of the day. A Vespen noble ascended to the Harmondale throne, and then Aaron Gryphonheart besieged it, killing the Vespen ruler. Rowdy crowd.
Age of Man: Empires, Betrayals, and the Gryphonheart Legacy!!
Man’s time to shine, with intricate politics, epic battles, and the shaping heritage of the Gryphonheart family. Most of your Heroes III memories fall into place here!
- Warlock Forges Daggers (around 850 AS): Magic daggers were made by a Warlock, possibly Elmo (a unique character in this timeline).
- Hellenix Reigns (870 to 881 AS): A figure named Hellenix began a reign related to the Search of the Sun.
- War of Dove and Crow (circa 900s AS): The Sun and Moon Churches waged a brutal war in Jadame. Dereko commanded the Search of the Sun to victory. Ha! Boo, moon-worshippers!
- Battle of Shimangar (902 AS): The decisive Battle of Shimangar was fought and the strategic city of Forus was lost.
- Archer’s Guild Falls (912 to 918 AS): The Archer’s Guild Hall somehow caught fire. The Percival, a valuable artifact, was sold to the Elves. Suspicious, much?!
- Battle of the Morning (around 969 AS): Humans and Elves laid siege to the Assassins’ Guild in concert. Teamwork!

Part 2: The Ashan Timeline – A New Age of Dragons!! (Ubisoft Era)
Alright, if your head isn’t spinning yet, here’s the new lore! And here’s where the tale turns radical, introducing a new, dragon-themed cosmology and new world, Ashan. No Enroth, no Kreegans anymore – all about Asha, Urgash, and the six Elemental Dragons from now on. YSD (Years of the Seventh Dragon) is used as the dating system here. Nine distinct ages we’re experiencing: Mythic, Ancient, Historical, and the Eclipses One to Six. Buckle up for a fresh coat of paint on your fantasy!
Mythic Age: Birth of Ashan!!
The beginnings of this new fledgling universe, where forces of cosmos brought forth completely everything. Big bang, fantasy style.
- Cosmic Egg and the Primordial Dragon (Unknown): Out of the raw, unconditioned emptiness emerged a cosmic egg, which exploded with two primordial twins: Asha, the Dragon of Order, and Urgash, the Dragon of Chaos. Wow, what an entrance!
- Colors of Magic and Creation of Ashan (Unknown): Six types of magic—Darkness, Light, Earth, Fire, Water, and Air—were discovered by Asha, the eternal creator, and used by her to lovingly construct the world of Ashan. Stunning!
- Elemental Dragons (Unknown): Asha gave birth to six powerful Elemental Dragons, one associated with each color of magic: Malassa (Darkness), Elrath (Light), Sylanna (Earth), Arkath (Fire), Shalassa (Water), and Ylath (Air). These are quite large benefactors to their respective alignments.
- Creation of the Elder Races (Unknown): Asha bestowed upon every Elemental Dragon an Elder Race: Angels for Light, Faceless for Darkness, Elves for Earth, Dwarves for Fire, Humans for Air, and Nagas for Water. All but a few had a patron deity.
- Creation of Demons (Unknown): From the wild, uncivilized nature of Urgash sprang the destructive line of Demons. Because a good story needs an evil villain, or a couple hundred thousand.
- Wars of Creation (Unknown): The Mythic Age ended with a wholesale, reality-bending war between the ancient twins. Urgash was vanquished (but not destroyed, because that simply doesn’t occur!) and locked up in the world’s core of flame. What a start to a world!
Ancient Age: First Empires and Divine Conflicts!!
Order slowly came into being, leading to early empires and the first great conflicts between divine minions. It’s not complete quiet on the other side, however!
- Founding of the Dragon Empire (Unknown): The Dragon Gods, being largely benevolent, imparted visions to their mortal minions, which led to the foundation of the Dragon Empire.
- Demon-Angel War (Unknown): Urgash’s armies (the Demons) incited a war against Elrath’s armies (the Angels). Good vs. Evil, Round 1 for Ashan!
- Elder Wars (Unknown): An extremely ancient war erupted when the Angels, children of Light, fought a crusade against the Faceless, children of Darkness. (Peace between the Elder Races, ahem?)
Historical Age: The Seventh Dragon and Mortal Empires!!
This age brings us forward key characters, the dawn of old empires, and ominous whispers of a mind-blowing prophecy!
- Revelation of the Seventh Dragon (0 YSD): A star-elf, Sar-Elam, became cosmic conscious, was enlightened by Asha, and became the Seventh Dragon. He bullied the Angels and Faceless into signing the Twilight Covenant, temporarily ending their bickering. So, here’s Year Zero of the Seventh Dragon! All eyes are on this guy now.
- Falcon Empire born (3 YSD): Falcon the Great united the human plains tribes and created the mighty Falcon Empire.
- Griffin Duchy born (25 YSD): Court knight Ishvan Griffin established the Griffin Duchy.
- Demon Invasion and War of Fire (28 to 40 YSD): Demons occupied Ashan and slew many of the Angels. The remaining ones fled to the Falcon Empire and caused its conversion to Elrathism. Sar-Elam killed himself in order to trap the Demons inside Sheogh. The Falcon Empire was then reshaped as the Holy Falcon Empire (48 YSD) by Emperor Brian Falcon. Duke Ishvan Griffin was assassinated. Tragic!
- Healing Decades and the Irollan Birth (50 to 260 YSD): The chaos caused by the demons forced the Elves to repair and unify their ruined forests, and they formed the country of Irollan. Sylvan pride!
- Skirmish of Seven (62 YSD): The seven followers of Sar-Elam, not able to agree on his preachings, broke apart. Because even followers of prophets fight!
- Demon Messiah Prophecy (67 YSD): A foreboding prophecy foretold the arrival of a Demon Messiah, a demon-human cross capable of being born to liberate the Demons from their imprisonment. Eek!
- Death of Sar-Shazar (74 YSD): Sar-Shazar died, his body mysteriously dissolving to dust when mages tried to move him. Creepy.
- Dragon Knights become a Hidden Organization (104 YSD): The Dragon Knights retreated to covert sanctuaries on the command of their ailing master, Sar-Badon. Keeping it under wraps.
First Eclipse: Uncertainty Unleashed!!
First weakening of Sheogh’s prison led to fresh perils and the controversial evolution of necromancy. Something’s always up, isn’t it?!
- War of the Blood Moon (330 to 336 YSD): Total lunar eclipse made Sheogh’s walls weak, and Demons breached, invading Ashan. MADNESS! AGAIN!
- Creation of Orcs (335 YSD): As a counter to demon invasion, the Seven Cities Wizards grew clever, making Orcs by infusing demon blood into men. Worked, sort of. And gave us a new and fascinating faction!
- Creation of Beastmen (344 YSD): The Seven Cities mages went on doing more genetic manipulation, creating Rakshasas, Centaurs, Minotaurs, and other Beastmen.
- Magical Plague (circa 400 YSD): A mysterious plague swept the Seven Cities, magically assaulting wizards. One of the handful to survive was a fellow called Bane, who lost his entire family. Complete disaster.
- Birth of Sandro (444 YSD): The famous necromancer Sandro was born. (That Sandro, yes! Just keeps popping up again and again, doesn’t he?)
- Discovery of Necromancy (461 YSD): Belketh, the Seven Cities mage, found the evil art of necromancy and started teaching it. What were the chances this would turn out well, huh?!
- Beastmen Revolt (467 to 470 YSD): Not a surprise, really: the Beastmen and Orcs revolted against their human masters. Good thinking.
- Orc Crusade (478-504 YSD): Wizards and Knights tried to put down the revolt. The Orcs ran, some of whom found themselves on the Pao Islands.
- Independence of Hammerfall (470 YSD): Hammerfall city gained independence from the Falcon Empire. Hurrah!
- Creation of Constructs (479 YSD): Magic was imbued by mages in the first generation of Constructs. Clockwork soldiers!
- Discovery of Mother Namtaru (505 YSD): Mother Namtaru, the source of necromancy, was discovered. Necromancer Sandro was banned for opposing a new cult that emerged. Naughty Sandro!
- Birth of Crag Hack (512 YSD): Crag Hack was born.
- Johanna’s Succession (528 YSD): Arneal the Heart, High King of Irollan, consolidated power, but Minor Elven Queen Johanna rose to prominence. Politics, even for elves!
- War of the Bitter Ashes (540 to 548 YSD): A genocidal conflict between Elves and the Holy Falcon Empire gave birth to the Dark Elves. And yet another faction!
- Peace of New Spring (548 YSD): Tense peace between Elves and Dark Elves. For a time.
Second Eclipse: Demons Back!!!
Another blood moon, another demon assault, and further polarization of Ashan politics. It’s now a trend!
- Second Eclipse: Ascension of the Demon Sovereign (564 YSD): The second blood moon eclipse arrived, and the Demon Sovereign rose from the Order of the Void. Uh oh, more villains!
- Sandro Re-emerges (565 YSD): Sandro re-emerged after 60 years of exile. He’s a bad penny, that man!
- Day of the Tears of Fire (566 YSD): The Elven capital of Refiga was destroyed by a great blaze that killed High King Arneal. The Dark Elves were blamed and banished from Irollan, and their leader, Johanna, was slain. Tragic, fiery anarchy.
- Battle at Farwind Island (568 YSD): Dark Elf Irina, renegade Dark Elf Sinethar, human renegade Rage and the Elf Telenor engaged in the Battle of Farwind Island.
- Crisis in Karthal (575 YSD): Sword Coast by the Sea was under siege by a group of raiders.
- War Under the Mountains (586 to 702 YSD): Conflict between the Dwarves and the Dark Elves erupted over subterranean territories. The Dark Elves were eventually driven out. Always a battle over territory!
- Rise of the Necromancers (610 to 660 YSD): Feuds between Wizards and Necromancers had been responsible for 50 years of strife. You’d think they’d know better!
- Reoccurrence of the Magical Plague (660 YSD): The magical plague reappeared, turning all necromancers into the undead. Bane, another survivor of the initial plague, was sent to discover. Still beset by it!
Third Eclipse: Secret Wars and Mage-Necro Duelz!!
A brief lunar eclipse released new demonic menaces and stoked up the bitter mages-necromancers war. Just what we needed!
- Dragon Hunt (717 YSD): There was a brief lunar eclipse when an army of Demons escaped into the world, looking for hidden Dragon Knight fortresses and launching a bloody, secret war. Devious demons!
- Purge of the Necromancer (751 to 770 YSD): Seven Cities’ wizards tried to purge necromancers, sparking a civil war that died down with the heroic defeat of the necromancers. Almost.
- Death of Daniel (756 YSD): Daniel, High King of the Elves, died and was succeeded by Aileron.
- Fall of the Seven Cities (771 YSD): Heresh was founded by Necromancers. Mages founded the Silver League, where necromancy was forbidden forever. Lines in the sand!
- War of the Broken Staff (813 to 822 YSD): War between Belketh, lord of Heresh, and the Silver Cities ended with Belketh defeated.
- Death of Sultan (820 YSD): Sultan, the right hand of Belketh, was defeated and slain by a Silver Cities mage.
- Death of Belketh (822 YSD): Commander Belketh of the Heresh necromancers was killed by Silver Cities mages. One less necromancer problem!
Fourth Eclipse: The Falcon’s Last Stand!!
The most terrible eclipse to date, climaxing in the collapse of the Holy Falcon Empire and the rise of a new Griffin dynasty. Things are really getting bad.
- Falcon’s Last Flight (843 YSD): Demons, led by Isabel, overran the Holy Falcon Empire. Empress Maeve was murdered and the royal family massacred with Brandon Falcon the sole survivor. Savage, outright savage.
- Civil War in the Falcon Empire (845 to 853 YSD): Civil war erupted as various royal dynasties battled each other for the throne of the empire. Insult following injury!
- Rise of Griffin (853 YSD): Duke Ivan Griffin proclaimed his rule over the rechristened Holy Griffin Empire. New chapter!
- Astras and the Binding Blade (929 YSD): Wizard Astras, for whatever reason, allowed demons to go wild in Ashan. His daughter, Nadia, ultimately employed the mighty Blade of Binding to end a blood moon.
- Death of Sandro (Unknown YSD): Archmage Cyrus, allied with Emperor Oleg of the Griffin Empire, besieged Lord Keep and eventually, at last, dispatched Sandro. Good riddance, you old lich!
- War of the Grey Alliance (951 YSD): The Elves (High King Aileron), the Knights (King Alexei), and the Wizards (Archmage Cyrus) attacked jointly against the Demon Sovereign in Sheogh. Aileron and Cyrus refused to help Alexei, who attacked alone and was slain. What a horrible strategic blunder!
Fifth Eclipse: Queen Isabel’s Destiny!!
The outcomes of the prior covenants and deceptions continue to shape the course of Ashan, with emphasis on the eventful fate of Queen Isabel. So much angst over one queen!
- Queen Isabel’s War (969 YSD): A war was waged between the Ashan groups and the Demons, who were competing over control of Queen Isabel of the Holy Empire. Isabel was taken captive by the Demons and forced to deliver the Demon Messiah, Aerith. That is… a great deal.
- Civil War of the Griffin Empire (969 to 973 YSD): Biara, aka the Queen Isabel (a demon impostor), and her Red Church clashed with Freyda Unicorn’s (the real Isabel) armies and her allies. Isabel stepped down after the Demons’ defeat to make way for Freyda, and thus the Holy Unicorn Empire was founded. A new empire, a new hope!

- Rise of Arantir (972 YSD): Death Lord Arantir united Heresh and sought to stop the prophecy of the Demon Messiah. He’s busy!
- Arrival of the Demon Messiah (989 YSD): The Demon Messiah, Seraph, was faced with a most important, world-altering choice: to embrace his humanity, or refuse it completely by freeing his father, Kha-Beleth, and all demons. Ashan’s fate hangs in the balance!!
